Mothers May I….?

Mothers (and fathers), may I  invite you to a fun month of creative writing that will include your children?  During the month of May, I will post prompts with themes for poems written by children. Join in on the fun if you like, no age limit will be imposed!

Now kids, today’s prompt is inspired by Edward Lear. He is best known for his Book of Nonsense written in 1846. This may seem a long, long time ago, but you probably are familiar with some of his poems. Have you heard of The Owl and The Pussycat? Well, he wrote it! It starts like this:

The Owl and the Pussy-Cat went to sea
   In a beautiful pea-green boat:
They took some honey, and plenty of money
Wrapped up in a five-pound note.

We will take a look at another poem he wrote and get a chance to write our own nonsense rhymes based on his Nonsense Alphabet. Take a look at the following rhymes to get you started, and then take a letter, any letter, maybe the first letter of your name and create your own nonsense rhyme. If you like, you can get fancy and put it on paper and have someone take a picture of you with it. Then post it on the Little Poets facebook page so we can publish it on this blog. Then you can have all of your friends see how talented you are! I can’t wait to see what you write!

This is a page from Edward Lear's Nonsense Alphabet. After reading it, take a letter, maybe the first letter of your name, and create a nonsense rhyme. It doesn't have to make sense. It just has to rhyme.
